I CANNOT believe that Christmas will be here in 25 days! I'm right in the middle of playing a bunch of Christmas shows and I'd love to see you out for the remaining few! It's been a busy fall playing shows and I'm loving it! And if you come out to the next few, you may very well hear a couple Christmas tunes. I know you hear it all day, every day on the radio, but really - there is nothing like getting together in a small (or big) room with others and hearing Christmas music LIVE and unique to the performer! I think it's because they're classics. People (or in this case, musicians) have heard them and have known them since they could crawl and so they feel comfortable taking liberty with the melody, the chords and the inflections. I think that the way a musician decides to cover a Christmas song says a lot about who they are!
A pop star diva will probably sing "O Holy Night" passionately and with lots of riffs! Why? Because they can!
A folk artist might sing "Little Drummer Boy" with plenty of guitar picking and driving rhythm. Why? Because their fingers and guitars were made for it!
My favourite Christmas song changes every year. Two years ago it was "Joy to the World" - the funked up version :). Last year it was "Angels We Have Heard on High" because I found a cool harmony for the chorus. And this year - WHO KNOWS!! But you'll have to come out because I'm going to have to cover a few and as we all know - a covered Christmas carol says a lot about a person!
Spread much Christmas cheer and laugh as much as you possibly can, okay?! And start to claim one song as yours for this year. It might not be yours the year after.

I will be like a little birdie flitting around the Vancouver/Fraser Valley area this fall. Chirping out a merry tune for one and for all who decide to come out and give it a listen!
And by the way, I'll be introducing "Rachelle Kostelyk" merch in the next few months - no t-shirts for this gal! It's different and very "me"....and hopefully very YOU!!
Be well my friends. |

"Attend first to the divine and the work at hand becomes art"
I have been slowly making my way through a book I'm sure a few of you have read - "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron. Everyone should read it. Those even justly slightly artistically or creatively inclined have no excuse not to! It will do your heart and mind a wealth of good! The book has been a project I've been working through with a friend of mine who is one very creative gal! It's been refreshing and has encouraged me to treat my art and my creativity with more respect and tenderness than I have before.
Now that the summer has folded over and we're moving onward and upward into fall I want to let you know that I've got some very cool projects in the works! I'm doing a lot of writing (music) these days! I've also been doing co-writing with some very talented songwriters for an up and coming band. I'll leave it at that for now, but I'll keep you posted when I know more! I am planning a few shows in the Fraser Valley/ Vancouver area for fall and I'll be spending a fair bit of my time writing and creating and dreaming and scheming about an upcoming album. It's never easy to be a broke and inspired musician. But I suppose that I wouldn't fit the stereotype if I wasn't, right? Right, Rachelle. Right. |
